There is some doubt as to the origins of this white grape variety. It was first described in the Italian national grape variety registry (Bollettino Ampelografico) in 1875 and cited again by Di Rovasenda in 1877. Sannino (1892) considered it to be the most important grape variety in the province of Teramo. Cultivated in only limited areas of the central Adriatic regions in Italy, its use declined toward the end of the twentieth century: in 1996 the Montonico vineyards covered a total of just over 14 hectares. It is currently grown on more than 70 hectares, almost exclusively in the province of Teramo, where historically it has been grown mainly in the municipalities of Bisenti and Cermignano (Montonico di Bisenti, and Poggio delle Rose-Cermignano). Montonico wine generally has a moderately intense yellow hue, at times with greenish highlights, medium-low alcohol content, and a delicate bouquet of fruits and spices. It is slightly astringent and firmly structured to the palate.
